Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) is one of the most economically important plant viruses worldwide. With an exceptionally broad host range, CMV affects Solanaceous crops (tomato, bell pepper, chili pepper, tobacco), Cucurbit crops (zucchini, sponge gourd, watermelon, muskmelon, melon), fruit trees (passion fruit, banana), and numerous ornamental plants such as gladiolus, goldenrod, Lycoris, and orchids.

 

CMV spreads mainly through aphid vectors and mechanical contact. Infected plants often show mosaic patterns, leaf deformation, and stunted growth—symptoms that significantly reduce yield, quality, and market value. Because CMV can cause severe economic losses, early and accurate detection is essential.

 

Unlike CymMV and ORSV, CMV in orchids is commonly introduced from surrounding infected plants and transmitted by aphids in a non‑persistent manner. CMV‑infected orchids exhibit reduced growth vigor, faster leaf aging, and increased sensitivity to environmental stress. Once CMV enters an orchid nursery, flower quality declines, commercial value drops, and marketability is affected.
