Aflatoxins are contaminants produced when crops grow mold. Aflatoxins type B1, B2, G1, and G2 are common in corn, peanuts, rice, wheat, nuts and other foods and have a very strong liver toxicity and carcinogenicity. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies aflatoxins as group 1 absolute carcinogens (IARC, 2012).

People or animals eating foods or feeds that are contaminated with aflatoxins could cause liver damage. Aflatoxins –contaminated feeds not only harm the health of animals, but also indirectly affect consumer’s Health through the animal milk, which contains aflatoxin M1, a metabolite of other aflatoxins. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates that the total amount of aflatoxins in foods and feeds should not exceed 20 ppb; Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) limits the total content of aflatoxins to no more than 10 ppb (peanuts, almonds and soys are below 15 ppb) to avoid public health hazards.

Aflatoxins are a group of highly toxic secondary metabolic products of some Aspergillus spp. These metabolites, aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2, are all carcinogenic and mutagenic to humans and animals. Among which, aflatoxin B1 is the most prevalent and toxic. Foods and feeds are susceptible to aflatoxin contamination during production, processing, transportation and storage.

Agitest Food Safety Rapid Test - Aflatoxin Total, is an immunochromatographic test for detection of aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2 in foods and feeds. Results are interpreted visually.

Agitest Food Safety Rapid Test - Aflatoxin Total, has been performance tested and performance validated by FAPAS.
